The City of Avon Lake has issued a warning to its residents that the coyote mating season is underway and will continue until mid-March. To avoid potential conflicts, the city advises residents to remain vigilant.
According to an Avon Lake press release, the city has offered several tips to its residents. These include removing food sources from their yards such as bird seed on the ground, pet food, compost, and garbage outside of a bin. The city also recommends that dogs should be kept on leashes at all times and cats should be kept indoors, particularly from dusk till dawn.
The same press release also suggests that even with a fenced-in yard, residents should accompany their dogs in the yard from dusk through dawn. It further encourages the use of hazing techniques to deter coyotes from entering a resident's yard. These techniques can include yelling, clapping, whistling or throwing objects near them.
In another Avon Lake press release, it is stated that coyotes play a significant role in controlling populations of rodents, rabbits and other small wild animals. This makes them an integral part of the city's landscape.
