The John Marshall esports team has secured its place in the state championship match after finishing second in the regional competition.
"Making it to states is something I've wanted to do since I was a sophomore," said Julian, a graduating senior from the team, according to a news release by the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. "That is when I realized that there were so many good teams around the state, I wanted to be at least in that top group that makes it to states."
According to another statement from the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, the team from John Marshall School of Information and Technology will compete in the Super Smash Bros. tournament at the University of Akron. This marks a historic moment for the school as it's their first time qualifying for state level.
In anticipation of this event, Coach Arley Trujillo, also known as "Mr. T" and a 2022 Excellence in Teaching Award recipient, has set his sights on bringing home the championship trophy. According to another Cleveland Metropolitan School District news release, Trujillo has been diligently studying film on the other seven teams to provide his students with an insightful scouting report.
