PBS reports that Garrett Morgan, a son of freed slaves, triumphed over racial adversity to invent life-saving devices like the mechanical traffic signal and safety hood. Despite facing discrimination and challenges in recognition throughout his lifetime, he left a profound legacy as a pioneering African American inventor.
In a press release from Cuyahoga County, Executive Ronayne stated, "I am profoundly honored to declare March 4 "Garrett Morgan Day" in Cuyahoga County. Garrett Morgan’s legacy lives on in our County and throughout the world, and he will forever be remembered for his rich contributions to public safety."
