State Representatives Phil Robinson (D-Solon) and Dani Isaacsohn (D-Cincinnati) have introduced the Universal Background Checks Act in Ohio. The proposed legislation aims to close existing loopholes and mandate background screenings for all firearm purchases, with a focus on addressing the increasing number of gun-related deaths and enhancing public safety measures.

"Closing the loophole in the background check process will help reduce violent crime, deter self-harm, and support law enforcement's efforts to keep dangerous weapons out of dangerous hands," said Robinson, according to Ohio House of Representatives. "I'm tired of hearing about mass shootings, school shootings, and children dying from gun violence weekly, sometimes daily, in Ohio and across the country. Even if passing universal background checks only saved one life in Ohio, it would be worth it."

According to the press release, the bill requires background checks for all firearm purchases. This would necessitate private sellers to manage transfers through federally licensed firearms dealers or local law enforcement agencies, both of which are familiar with conducting such screenings. Federal records indicate that Ohio's extensive network of over 2,200 gun dealers ensures that every resident is within a ten-mile radius of a firearm retailer.

A report by EveryStat.org reveals that gun violence continues to be a significant issue in Ohio. The statistics are alarming, showing a substantial increase in gun-related fatalities over the past decade. Between 2012 and 2021, the state experienced a 52% rise in gun deaths, surpassing the national average. Suicides and homicides accounted for a large portion of these fatalities, with firearms being involved in 80% of all homicides in Ohio.

The press release also notes that the introduction of the Universal Background Checks Act coincides with the inaugural Gun Violence Prevention Summit at the Ohio Statehouse. Various groups attended this event, including the Brady Campaign and Moms Demand Action. House Democrats presented additional gun safety legislation such as the Keeping Our Survivors Safe Act, declaring Gun Violence a Public Health Crisis, Commonsense Concealed Carry, and establishing the Ohio Task Force on Gun Violence - all aimed at addressing this pressing issue.
