Fire Chief Christopher Lyons of the City of Bay Village has issued a reminder to residents about the importance of maintaining the area around a fire hydrant on their property. He emphasized that a 3-foot space must be cleared to allow firefighters easy access.

According to the Ohio Fire Code, residents are required to maintain the space around hydrants so that firefighters can work in any direction around them. This is crucial for activities such as hooking hoses and operating valves during emergencies, as stated in a message from Chief Lyons.

Lyons further stressed that keeping this three-foot space clear can save valuable time for firefighters during an emergency when they need to use the hydrant. The fire chief's message indicated that items like posts, fences, vehicles, or landscaping should not be stored near the hydrant.

In addition, Chief Lyons highlighted the necessity of maintaining the 3-foot minimum clearance by shoveling snow away from the hydrant during winter, according to another message from him.
