Cleveland State University issued the following announcement on April 4.

CLEVELAND (April 4, 2022) – Cleveland State University (CSU) announces that U.S. Representative Shontel M. Brown, the new congresswoman representing Ohio’s 11th Congressional District, and Timothy Alexander, writer, speaker and coach, will speak at the university’s commencement ceremonies on May 14 at the Wolstein Center.

Sworn in on November 4, 2021, Congresswoman Brown is a lifelong Clevelander who has served the people of Northeast Ohio for more than a decade. She first entered public service in 2012, when she was elected as a Warrensville Heights city council member.

In 2014, she was elected to represent the 9th district on the Cuyahoga County Council. As a County Council Member, she earned a reputation as a proven and unifying leader, drawing job-creating projects to the district, improving access to affordable health care, and supporting public education. Congresswoman Brown will address graduates at the morning ceremony, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Timothy Alexander is a best-selling writer, award-winning speaker and life coach who thrives at the intersection of character development, counseling and mentorship. A native of Birmingham Alabama, he attended Erwin High School and was ranked the #8 high school football player in the state. Alexander had the opportunity to play for any college in the country; however, he was involved in a life changing car accident in 2006, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down.

From that point on, Timothy was left to find his purpose in life while paralyzed. He uses his quote, “We don’t need it to be easy we just need it to be possible®” and personal experience as a catalyst to inspire change in the lives of those who hear him speak. Timothy Alexander will speak at the afternoon ceremony at 2 p.m.

"We are very excited to have both Congresswoman Brown and Tim Alexander as speakers for our spring 2022 commencement,” said CSU president Harlan M. Sands. “Both of them have incredibly powerful and inspirational stories to share that will resonate with our graduates and their families. I know that they are looking forward to being with us and participating in this special day.”

CSU will confer nearly 2,200 degrees at two ceremonies on Saturday, May 14. Commencement for the College of Education & Human Services, Washkewicz College of Engineering, College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences and the Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs will be held at 9:30 a.m. The 2 p.m. ceremony will include the Monte Ahuja College of Business, School of Nursing and the College of Sciences and Health Professions.
