Bill Tomson joined the Westshore Campus as an academic support technician just this month, but this isn’t his first Tri-C experience. He attended classes in the 1990s before leaving to work as a sports complex manager and delivery driver. An automobile accident a few years ago necessitated a career change, so he returned to Tri-C — first as a student, and now as an employee. Learn more about Bill — including his true career aspirations — in this week’s Tri-C Famous!
1. If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would you go? What would you do?
We’re heading to the Bermuda Triangle in August. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. With all the stories of planes and ships disappearing, I just want to see it for myself. I’m certified with two different scuba agencies, so depending on my back, I’m hoping for at least one dive in the Triangle.
2. What are you most proud of?
My four grandchildren. They’re pleasant to be around, and very smart for their age. I go to them for technical advice.
3. Who’s your favorite band/performer?
Billy Squier. I started playing guitar at a young age and wanted so badly to be a musician. Back in the ‘80s, my dad contacted his rep about an opening in his band. I didn’t make it, obviously, but Capitol Records did send us backstage passes. Billy is 73 now, so another tour is probably out of the question. But I’m still holding out hope!
